Wisconsin outside linebacker and Kauai native Nick Herbig was taken by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft on Saturday, reuniting him with his older brother Nate.
Herbig, a Saint Louis School graduate, was the No. 132 overall pick.
“Pittsburgh, let’s go!” Herbig posted on social media. “In the famous words of Nate Herbig, I’m just happy to be here, man, and I can’t wait to rock with y’all and bring a Super Bowl to the ‘Burg, man. Let’s rock.”
In March, the Steelers signed the elder Herbig, who has experience at offensive line with the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets, to a two-year deal.
“It’s all I’ve really dreamed about. Now I get a chance to play for the Steelers, a legendary organization. And I get the chance to play with my brother,” Nick Herbig said.
He was an All-American and first-team All-Big Ten selection in his junior season with the Wisconsin Badgers in 2022. He had 15.5 tackles for loss, including 11 sacks, and two forced fumbles in 11 games.
ESPN had him as its fifth-ranked outside linebacker in the draft and its 97th-rated player overall.
“Really like his pass-rush ability, really like his competitiveness, his toughness on tape,” Steelers outside linebackers coach Denzel Martin said in a video posted by the team. “I think you see it, it’s very evident. I’m very excited to get to work with him.”
Herbig was the third Wisconsin player taken in the draft, after center Joe Tippmann at No. 43 overall to the Jets and defensive tackle Keeanu Benton at No. 49 to the Steelers.
He was a four-star recruit out of Saint Louis after helping the Crusaders to four straight Hawaii Open Division state championships.
Later Saturday, Punahou School alumnus Andrei Iosivas, a wide receiver and heptathlete at Princeton, was taken by the Cincinnati Bengals as the No. 206 overall pick in the sixth round.
