LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Galaxy announced Thursday that it had acquired Brazilian midfielder Douglas Costa as a Designated Player. The decorated midfielder will join the Galaxy on a six-month loan from Brazilian side, Gremio, before being added as a DP.

At the conclusion of the loan, Costa will join the Galaxy on a one-and-a-half year deal that will see him remain with the team through the 2023 MLS season.

Costa, 31, arrives in LA following widespread speculation about who the team would sign to fill the DP spot vacated by Jonathon dos Santos. He brings with him a substantial international soccer pedigree having won 21 trophies playing in top leagues across Brazil, Italy, Germany and Russia.

"I'm very happy to be part of the LA Galaxy," said Costa in an Instagram post. "I think it's going to be an important challenge."

Internationally, Costa has three goals and six assists in 31 appearances for the Brazilian Men’s National Team since his debut in 2014. Costa made two appearances off the bench for the Seleção during the 2018 FIFA World Cup, notching an assist in Brazil’s 2-0 win over Costa Rica on June 22, 2018.

“Douglas is a world-class player and a proven champion at the highest level. His capacity to create and finish will add yet another level to our attack,” said LA Galaxy Head Coach Greg Vanney. “We are excited to integrate him into the team as we push toward the start of the season.”
