LOS ANGELES — The 2021 Major League Soccer All-Star Game will be held at Banc of California Stadium, the home ground of Los Angeles FC. The match, which will pit a team of MLS All-Stars against a selection of all-star players from Mexico's Liga MX, was originally set to be held in LA in 2020.
However, last season's All-Star Game was canceled following the suspension of the 2020 MLS season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
MLS Commissioner Don Garber and Liga MX Executive President Mikel Arriola were on-hand along with LA Mayor Eric Garcetti Wednesday to make the official announcement at the stadium.
The trio were also joined by LAFC Lead Managing Owner, Larry Berg and special guests.
The annual MLS All-Star Game typically pits a selection of the league's best players against foreign teams. Past opponents have included English Premier League side, Chelsea FC, Spanish giants Real Madrid and German Bundesliga powerhouse, Bayern Munich.
Players to have donned the All-Star jersey in the past include league greats like David Beckham, Landon Donovan, Thierry Henry and Robbie Keane, along with current MLS stars like LAFC's Carlos Vela.
This year's match will see the All-Stars take on the cream of the crop from Mexico's top-flight domestic league for the first time.
The 2020 MLS All-Star team will be coached by LAFC coach, Bob Bradley.
“This will be a special night of football in Los Angeles,” said Bradley. “It is always an honor to represent our city and our league on the international stage, and we look forward to competing against the LIGA MX All-Stars.”
The rescheduled match will take place on Aug. 25.
