In an environment that felt like high school sports were officially back, Etiwanda High School finally got the rematch it had been waiting for.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, the outcome was the same as in the 2020 SoCal Regional Finals, with Sierra Canyon coming out on top — this time to the tune of an 82-76 win.
The Trailblazers led by as much as seven points at three different times in the second half, but the Eagles came back fighting time after time.
Darvelle Wyatt and Jahmai Mashack had the Eagles soaring high early with a couple of clutch shots from the perimeter and great defense inside.
However, as the second half went on, Sierra Canyon moved into a full-court press, forcing Etiwanda turnovers and leading to several easy buckets in transition. Throughout the night, junior guard Amari Bailey was noticeably in pain after tweaking his knee in the second quarter but wouldn't let head coach Andre Chevalier take him out of the contest.
Bailey proved once again why he is one of the best players in the country, leading the trailblazers down the stretch and on to victory.
With the win, Sierra Canyon advances to its fourth-straight Open Division title game. The Trailblazers will face off against Corona Centennial in a battle between the top two seeds.
Corona Centennial will also compete for a championship on the girls' end, this time against Mater Dei in another matchup between the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds.
All the action tips off Friday.
