NCAA Division III sports won't hold fall championships in 2020.

The Division III Presidents Council canceled the championships in all fall sports Wednesday, citing COVID-19 "and related administrative and financial challenges."

The move affects the postseasons of cross country, field hockey, football, soccer, volleyball, and water polo for many small colleges across the country. A number of Division III conferences have already called off fall sports for 2020, with some exploring the possibility of moving competitions to the spring.

Earlier Wednesday, the NCAA directed individual schools and conferences to meet requirements in order to hold fall sports in 2020.

"The [Board of Governors] expressed serious concerns about the continuing high levels of COVID-19 infection in many parts of the nation," the NCAA said in a statement. "The board has determined that it will only support moving forward with fall championships and other postseason play if strict conditions are applied and adhered to."
