CHINO, Calif. — In a historic move, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) is transferring prisoners with death sentences out of San Quentin prison and the Central California Women's Facility (CCWF) and into institutions around the state with an electrified secured perimeter.

More than 40 inmates have been transferred to the California Institution for Men, a state prison in Chino.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation says these transfers are a result of the voter-approved Proposition 66, which requires death-sentenced inmates to participate in work prison jobs to pay restitution to their victims.

However, many officials and residents in Chino and its surrounding cities are concerned about the transfers, saying the Chino prison doesn't have the infrastructure to hold these high-level criminals.

The City of Chino is gathering signatures in a petition to send to Gov. Gavin Newsom.
