LOS ANGELES — In preparation for the pool season, the city of Los Angeles Thursday continues efforts to recruit more lifeguards.

The Department of Recreation and Parks, Aquatics Division, is slated to host a test date for potential candidates on Sunday at 1 p.m., located at the Glassell Pool, 3704 Verdugo Road.

Candidates that successfully pass the test are invited to participate in the Lifeguard Academy, where they learn lifesaving skills such as CPR, first aid, and Automated External Defibrillator certifications. Recruits also receive paid training, flexible hours and get to work in fun environments.

Applicants must be 17 years old by June 1, 2024, show proof of identification and complete a COVID-19 vaccination form.

For more information, contact Citywide Aquatics at 323-906-7953. To sign up for an upcoming test, applicants can apply at LA City Lifeguard Test.

Lifeguards play a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of swimmers and pool visitors. Additionally, lifeguards can serve as coaches and instructors for youth and adult aquatic programs such as swim lessons, water polo, dive teams, swim teams, surf and kayak lessons and aquacise.

According to the department, an LA City lifeguard and aquatics staff from Glassell Pool recently saved a person’s life. The patron had lost consciousness in the locker room and was found not breaching and without a pulse.

Staff performed CPR and delivered an AED shock. The individual later recovered.

Additional test dates will take place on March 29 at Dymally Pool, and on April 6 at John C. Argue Swim Stadium. Candidates are encouraged to participate in the Los Angeles City Pre Academy Training to prepare for the lifeguard test and academy.
