LOS ANGELES — Metro debuted its ambassador pilot program Monday, which will try to improve safety along LA County’s transit system for riders.

The program had a soft launch on Oct. 2022, with a handful of ambassadors. Monday’s launch, however, deployed 300 ambassadors along trains and buses throughout the county.

Each ambassador has had 80 hours of training — half of that time in a classroom setting and the latter half out in the field, according to Metro.

They will be staffed from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends.

The pilot program is costing the county $122.8 million for the next five years. Depending on feedback from riders, Metro will meet with county officials to discuss expanding the program.

If it ends up reducing crime on Metro’s system, lawmakers will also consider reducing armed law enforcement on trains and buses.
