LOS ANGELES (CNS) — Authorities Monday identified a man, allegedly armed with a gun, who was killed in a shooting involving Los Angeles police officers in the Westlake area.

The shooting occurred about 3:20 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of Sixth Street and Rampart Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

“Rampart patrol officers were in the area ... when they saw a man with a gun near that intersection,” police said in a statement. “When officers made contact with the suspect, an OIS (officer-involved shooting) occurred.”

Giovanni Luna, 35, of Los Angeles died at the scene, the Los Angeles county coroner’s office reported.

A semi-automatic handgun was found next to the body and was booked into evidence, police said.

No officers or bystanders were injured, police said.

The investigation was continuing.
