PARAMOUNT, Calif. (CNS) — A man who was shot to death by California Highway Patrol officers on the westbound Glenn Anderson (105) Freeway in Paramount was identified by authorities Friday.

The shooting occurred about 11:20 a.m. Wednesday near Garfield Avenue, according to the CHP. John Alaniz, 34, died at a hospital, the Los Angeles County coroner's office reported. His city of residence was not known.

Officers went to the location after receiving "a call of a traffic crash involving a vehicle versus pedestrian ...," the CHP said in a statement.

"California Highway Patrol Officers responded to the scene and, upon their arrival, exited their patrol vehicle to check on the welfare of the pedestrian who was struck," the CHP statement said.

"During the investigation, for reasons that remain part of the ongoing investigation, an officer-involved shooting occurred," the CHP said. "Once the officers determined the scene was safe, they provided medical aid to the male suspect until relieved by the Los Angeles City Fire Department."

Paramedics took the wounded man to Saint Francis Medical Center, where he died, the CHP reported.

"The officers were not injured as a result of this incident," the CHP said.

Authorities closed the westbound Glenn Anderson Freeway in the vicinity of the shooting, along with the Garfield Avenue on-ramp, for more than nine hours Wednesday afternoon while an investigation into the shooting was conducted.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call CHP's East Los Angeles Area office at 323-980-4600.
