A little more than 24 hours after President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from his reelection bid turned the 2024 race upside down, New York’s delegates to the Democratic National Convention have endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic nomination for president, the party announced Monday evening.

Gov. Kathy Hochul and state party leaders held a virtual meeting Monday evening to discuss their path forward following Biden’s sudden exit.

"The New York State Democratic Delegation stands behind Vice President Harris and is excited to cast our votes for her at the Democratic Nominating Convention," state Democratic Party Chair Jay Jacobs said in a statement. “The Vice President is a true leader, a partner to one of our most successful Presidents, and someone who represents the ideals and values of the Democratic Party - I'm thrilled New York has her back.”

Jacobs spoke with Capital Tonight shortly before the meeting and said he fully expected the party to unite around Biden’s second in command.

New York sends 307 Democratic delegates to the convention, which is scheduled to take place in Chicago in mid-August.

"Vice President Harris is a proven leader with the experience, skills, and moral clarity necessary to lead and there is no one better prepared to prosecute the case against Donald Trump,” Gov. Hochul said in a statement. “I've made it clear that Trump is the greatest threat to America's future and I will continue doing everything in my power to defeat him in November.”

The evening meeting came at the behest of Hochul, who had been a staunch supporter of Biden up until the end, even as other state elected officials, including Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado, called for Biden to end his campaign.

Jacobs on Capital Tonight brushed aside criticisms that Democrats are anointing Harris as the candidate.

“That’s nonsense. That’s pure nonsense,” he said. “The fact is that 14 million people came out in the primary for Biden with Kamala Harris as his vice president.”
