LOS ANGELES (CNS) — With Mayor Eric Garcetti in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to attend the C40 World Mayors Summit, newly named City Council President Paul Krekorian continues to pull double duty as the city’s acting mayor Thursday.
The council president automatically becomes acting mayor when the mayor is out of state. Garcetti will be out of town through Sunday.
Krekorian was elected council president only Tuesday — after Nury Martinez resigned last week for her involvement in the City Hall racism scandal. The two other council members on the recording, Kevin de León and Gil Cedillo, have so far resisted fierce pressure to resign.
The C40 World Mayors Summit brings together mayors, climate experts, advocates, business leaders and youth activists to address the climate crisis.
On Tuesday, Garcetti applauded Krekorian’s election, calling him a “committed and conscientious leader who can bring a smart, collaborative and effective approach to a painful moment when Angelenos deserve steady leadership on the City Council.”
“I am confident that he’ll assemble a leadership team of bridge builders, and I’ll work closely with the council to help heal the wounds caused by the hateful words of a few,” Garcetti said.
