LOS ANGELES — Incumbent Democrat Gil Cedillo lags behind progressive challenger Eunisses Hernandez by 2,400 votes in the race to represent Los Angeles Council District 1, which includes Highland Park, Macarthur Park and Chinatown.

Cedillo has yet to concede, but former Councilmember Zev Yaroslavsky said he faces an insurmountable lead by Hernandez, who promises to fight gentrification, homelessness and improve public safety by reinvesting the police budget into other departments.
