SANTA CLARITA, Calif. — The race to win California’s District 27 is being closely watched, and it could determine control of Congress.

Previously known as District 25, it once covered much of northern LA County, plus Simi Valley in Ventura County. When the lines were redrawn, Simi Valley was reassigned elsewhere and the boundary of what is now District 27 was extended a bit further north.

Former Assemblywoman Christie Smith and retired Naval Intelligence Officer Quaye Quartey are both hoping to unseat Republican incumbent Mike Garcia.
