SAN DIEGO — Since President Joe Biden announced in late March that up to 100,000 Ukrainian refugees would be able to seek asylum in the U.S., people have been arriving at the border of Mexico and San Diego in San Ysidro.
As more Ukrainians arrived, volunteers, like Phil Metzger, lead pastor of Calvary San Diego, started organizing services. A team of volunteers cropped up on both sides of the border, coordinating rides, places to stay, host families and hot food.
On Thursday, Biden announced that starting Monday, Ukrainians will no longer be able to come to the U.S. through Mexico and can apply for a streamlined humanitarian parole status through Europe called Uniting for Ukraine.
