Occidental College Professor of Politics Caroline Heldman appeared on The Beat on 1 Monday morning to offer her takeaways from what we've learned about the Mueller Report so far. While the report acknowledges that the Russians interfered with the election, it concluded that the Trump campaign didn't conspire or collude with Russia.
"Thankfully, they found that the Trump campaign did not collude with the Russians, which I think is a really good sign for our democracy," said Professor Heldman. "Because people trust the Mueller Report, and so that finding, I hope, will have a lot of purchase for Americans who were concerned that our democracy was under threat from an internal threat in addition to the Russian threat."
However, Heldman warned that the president may yet face scrutiny in regard to whether or not he obstructed justice.
"This is where the president is not being accurate in his assessment that he was exonerated," said Heldman.
The professor was also critical of the manner in which Attorney General William Barr handled the report.
"I think it was a shame that our AG injected partisan politics into what has otherwise been a really non-partisan investigation with Mueller," said Heldman.
