SAN DIEGO — Friendship Park is one of the few places where immigrant families can see each other. For many of them, it’s sacred land. But for years, the U.S. government has been restricting access to the park.

And now — despite the plea of hundreds of activists and local leaders — the Biden administration has announced they will be going ahead with their plans to replace half a mile of what they say are deteriorated walls at Friendship Park, not with similar fencing, but with bollard-style walls that became iconic during the Trump administration.

Advocates call it a desecration.
