TEXAS — A documentary on the U.S. Army soldier who was murdered in 2020 will be released on Netflix on Nov. 17. Vanessa Guillen was only 20 years old when she died at the hands of a fellow soldier at the U.S. Army base in Fort Hood where she was stationed.

Guillen was initially declared missing in April 2020, and her remains were discovered later in July. It was revealed that Guillen had been sexually harassed while at the base and leaders did not take appropriate action. Her family filed a lawsuit in August 2022, seeking $35 million in damages from the U.S. government.

“At the core, this is a story about overcoming the greatest odds imaginable in the name of family, love and justice. This is David vs. Goliath on steroids. Taking on the U.S. military, one of the largest, most powerful institutions in America is no easy feat. In making the film, it was incredible to witness a family, in the most tragic moment of their lives, put their grief aside, step out into the public arena and fight for the greater good,” said director Christy Wegener.

Guillen’s death sparked an international movement of assault victims seeking justice, sparking a social media movement with the trending hashtag #IAmVanessasGuillen. The documentary follows her family’s fight to bring change in the system.

The slain soldier would have been 23 on Sept. 30.
