ORLANDO, Fla. — For anyone who loves ice cream, the newest business to move into Disney Springs just might hit the spot.

Salt & Straw, an Oregon-based company known for its handmade ice cream and unique flavor combinations, opened its new location on Wednesday.

What You Need To Know

  • The company is known for its handmade ice cream and unique flavor combinations

  • People lined up outside the shop to try the ice cream

  • The shop rotates its menu on the first Friday of each month

People lined up early outside the shop for a chance to try the ice cream, and the first 100 customers were treated to a free scoop.

This marks the 27th shop for co-founders, and cousins, Kim and Tyler Malek.

For them, the opening of the Disney Springs location was a natural progression of their relationship with Disney after opening a location at the Downtown Disney District at Disneyland in 2018.

“It’s been a dream come true," Kim Malek said.

For the cousins, family remains at the heart the business.

“When I first had the idea of opening an ice cream shop, it was really about creating connections and being a community gathering place,” Kim Malek said. “I think having family at the center of that is a nice heartbeat to the whole thing.”

What sets Salt & Straw apart is its menu, which features ice cream with ingredients such as lavender, olive oil, guava, and coffee, as well as more traditional options like chocolate, sea salt and caramel.

Its menu of “classic flavors” includes Double Fold Vanilla, Chocolate Gooey Brownie, Freckled Mint Chocolate Chip and Honey Lavender.

Salt & Straw also rotates its menu on the first Friday of every month.

“It’s this big event at Salt & Straw every month, so whenever you come, there’s going to be a new menu," Tyler Malek said. "And we really focus on telling a distinct, new story with that menu."

For May, it will be about spring flowers, so the menu will have ice cream with edible flowers. In the fall, there’s a Thanksgiving menu with flavors like turkey.

“It means there’s always something new for someone as they come back,” Tyler Malek said.

A single scoop is priced at $6.95, while a double scoop is $9.50. Customers can also pick up a pint of ice cream for $12.95 or a flight for $14.75.

Salt & Straw is located next to the AMC movie theater and Sosa Family Cigars on Disney Springs’ West Side.

Wednesday's opening comes as the dining, entertainment and retail complex continue to add more offerings. Most recently, Local Green, an Atlanta-based company, opened a food truck at Disney Springs with vegan and vegetarian options on the menu.
