What You Need To Know

  • Disney's live-action "Mulan" to be released on Disney+

  • Film will be available on September 4 for additional cost

  • "Mulan" was originally set to be released in theaters in March

  • Coronavirus pandemic has disrupted Disney's business

The film will be offered on the streaming service for $29.99 as part of what Disney calls a “premiere access basis.”

“We see this as an opportunity to bring this incredible film to a broad audience currently unable to go to movie theaters, while also further enhancing the value and attractiveness of a Disney+ subscription with this great content,” Disney CEO Bob Chapek said during an earnings call Tuesday.

Mulan was originally slated to hit theaters in March before being delayed multiple times because of the pandemic. Along with the Dsney+ release, Mulan will be released theatrically in markets where Disney+ is not available and where theaters are open, according to Chapek.

With the pandemic causing movie theaters to close, Disney has had to reshuffle its film schedule, even opting to put some films like “Artemis Fowl,” and “Hamilton” on streaming instead. However, Mulan will mark the first time Disney has offered a release on its streaming platform for an extra charge.

As of Monday, Disney+, which launched last November, has passed 60.5 million paid subscribers worldwide.
