DOWNEY, Calif. – If you take a walk through the parking lot of Bastards Canteen in Downey on November 10, you'll hear a lot of people sharing in, "Happy Birthdays."

No, not everyone you'll meet there shares the same birthday, but they each of them shares in the celebration.

MORE VETERAN'S DAY STORIES:

That's because November 10th is the birthday of the United States Marine Corps.

"Today is the only day anybody remembers my birthday. It’s way more important than my real birthday," said Nick Velez, one of the co-founders of Bastards.

“I was born November 10th, 1775. I’m 244 years old and I’m a Marine. Semper Fi,” Velez said.

Velez opened Bastards in 2012 and has put on this event ever since. The restaurant was named after his battalion in the Marine Corps, nicknamed the "Magnificent Bastards."

They host an annual birthday celebration as an annual reminder of their loyalty to each other and to those they've lost, people like Calvin Spencer.

Velez and Spencer opened up Bastards together after meeting in the Marines. Although Spencer passed away last year in a motorcycle accident, Velez and his co-owner Manny Maeda carry on his legacy.

“We honor him here everyday and he’s here at work everyday, standing post, standing tall," Velez said. "He makes sure everyone in the City of Downey knows exactly why Bastards is here.”

Their annual event includes different vendors, live music, food, drinks, and of course, a birthday cake,

It's a unique chance for vets young and old to come together once a year to honor their beloved Marines with a well-deserved "Ooh Ra."
