WATTS, Calif. – Students in Watts have a completely new classroom.

The real estate development company Caruso gives scholarships to Saint Lawrence of Brindisi Catholic School. The company recently went one step further and teamed up with the Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters.

In about 48 hours volunteers, including union carpenters, were able to do a total classroom makeover.

Maribel Aguilar has taught for almost 15 years at this school. She attended the school herself, along with all three of her children who are currently students at Saint Lawrence of Brindisi.

For the past two years she has taught inside a standalone module. The school bought two of them secondhand for $53,000 because they needed room for their transitional kindergartners. The module was water damaged and run down.

The floor was ripped up and completely redone. Volunteers also installed custom cabinets.

“It’s amazing. I am just extremely grateful and really have no words,” said Aguilar.

“Seeing the kids’ reaction it just kind of blew my mind. It was a great feeling,” said Roger Corona, a volunteer.
