POMONA, Calif. – Artist Marc Vigil takes pumpkin carving to a whole new level using clay tools to make his creations come to life.

"The technique now, this guy, kind of like a potato peeler, it's got a really good sharp edge on it," said Vigil.

Vigil is an art school graduate, but his love for sculpting started when he was a kid. Over time, he has developed his own personal style.

"I always liked faces, and exaggerated so more of a caricature style, cartoon style," said Vigil.

Vigil’s sculpting career began with clay, and his art form evolved into carving wood with a chainsaw. He was introduced to pumpkins last year during the first year of Pumpkin Nights and has been enjoying it ever since.

"The texture and the medium is actually really soft. So I can actually do a lot more, make a little bit of a mess but somewhat of a quicker result and I don't have to worry about losing any fingers really," said Vigil.

Throughout the entirety of Pumpkin Nights, attendees can find Vigil live-sculpting every evening.

The fall event runs from October 10 through November 3. It features an interactive Halloween experience through seven Pumpkin Lands created with more than 3,000 artistically hand-carved real and synthetic pumpkins.

"What we really want to do here at Pumpkin Nights is create a unique experience for everybody from the 3-year-old to the 87-year-old. Don't know which kid is younger in that situation but they're all equally amazed here," said Joe Coddington.

Every Pumpkin Land has a festive energy with multi-sensory Halloween displays. As locals make their way through the magical quest, Pumpkin Nights hopes to leave everyone feeling enchanted and in the spirit of Halloween.

"The lights just really take it and turn it into magic," said Coddington.

Back at the carving station, Vigil has started working on a new face. He, along with the other artists, averages about one pumpkin carving per day during Pumpkin Nights, but it never feels like work.

"Getting paid is a bonus, so I just really look forward to it and it’s somewhat even therapeutic you get to kind of relax," said Vigil.

Vigil puts the finishing touches on his latest creation by inserting the arms and legs.

"Alright let's take you home," said Vigil.

The pumpkins help tell a story and add just a little extra Halloween flair.

"Bringing him to life it gives him his character, his attitude and he's pretty happy just hanging out with the rest of the pumpkins," said Vigil.

There will be plenty more of Vigil’s creations on display when you visit Pumpkin Nights.
