THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – As people begin to evacuate their homes from the wildfires raging across SoCal, not everyone knows what to do with their pets.

Rescuer and volunteer Christina Hackett is driving as far as Chatsworth to pick up dogs from homes that have already been evacuated. With all the road closures and traffic it has not been easy.

“There’s a lot of people that know us in the community and so they reached out to us because we let them know if anyone needs help and so we start getting the calls. The phone just keeps going,” said Hackett.

The nonprofit Shelter Hope has space set up to house not only animals, but animal owners too if need be.

Ideally people under evacuation orders would take their pets with them, but that’s not always possible.

"Here the dogs are safe and they're being taken care of and we have gone through this before unfortunately," said Hackett.

Last year during the Woolsey fire Shelter Hope opened its doors to dozens of pets. They filled up their shop as well as some donated space nearby.

This year they are even better prepared to wait out the wildfires.
