HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – It's a special moment for 12 -year-old Ahtzery who is a cancer patient at Children's Hospital LA.
She's getting to design cleats that Dodgers superstar Justin Turner will wear in honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
And while she's designing, he's learning about her life.
The day started with Ahtzery being surprised that Turner would be visiting her.
"I'm going to wear these cleats to show my support for you and all of your friends in the hospital today," said Turner. "And what I'm going to ask you to do is help me design these cleats."
The third baseman has been visiting the hospital in the month of August for the past three years to give kids battling cancer a chance to design his cleats.
This year he wore them at the Dodgers September 7 home game against the San Francisco Giants, a day that coincided with a day of recognition league-wide on Childhood Cancer Awareness Day.
And that platform is something Children's Hospital Los Angeles has been grateful for in its quest for a cure as cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among children in the United States.
"For him to be able to use his publicity, celebrity, to highlight the plight of the children, the battles they're facing and help not just raise awareness, but funds to support the vital research that will change the outlook for kids with cancer tomorrow," said Dr. Alan Wayne.
Back in Ahtzery's room she is finishing her design.
"I like it," she says.
"I think it looks good, let me see," said Turner. "Oh yeah, that is awesome, I love it."
"Thank you," she says.
Turner enjoys using his star power in his community to make kids like Ahtzery feel special, while bringing awareness to a critical cause.
