BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – Drivers on Santa Monica Boulevard might be surprised to see a hanging sculpture.

The artwork marks the beginning of BOLD summer 2019, which stands for Beverly Hills Open Later Days. It is a month-long celebration where Beverly Hills businesses stay open well into the night.

A former mayor started the biannual event three years ago to keep the city from basically shutting down after 6 p.m.

Artist Janet Echelman came up with the concept for the sculpture from a set of data collected at the ocean’s surface in one day. The piece is called 1.78. Echelman says this is how many microseconds a day on earth shortened the day the data was taken.

“First of all it’s exciting to see it suspended over the street. It’s part of driving culture in that sense,” said Echelman.

The sculpture’s thread-looking material is Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene. It is a very strong polymer with manufacturing and medical uses.

“There’s certain qualities of light and pattern that we’re trying here that have never been tried anywhere else in the world so it is a completely original work here for Beverly Hills,” said Echelman.

BOLD ends on August 24.
