LONG BEACH, Calif. – Last year a man lost his life after a crash on the water during the Long Beach Sprint Nationals, but the competition will continue this year.

The Long Beach Sprint Nationals is two days of boat races dating back to the 1940s.

Sean Davison, a 13-year-old racer who has competed since he was 9, faced his own close call when he was hit by another racer in Long Beach two years ago. His boat was broken up, but Sean managed to race again the very next day.

“I actually was really happy to get back out there cause I was really looking forward to this race,” said Sean.

Sean’s stepdad, Todd Kelm, was there when Sean crashed. He gifted him his first boat for Christmas four years ago.

“At first it was oh my God I hope he’s okay and as soon as we knew he was okay it was kind of light hearted,” said Kelm.

On August 5 Sean and his family received word that the race would proceed this year. Last minute or not, there is no hesitation for this team.

“He’s going to survive. He might get hurt. He might get his bell rung,” said Kelm.

Due to the event being confirmed late, tickets are only being sold at the gate.
