BURBANK, Calif. - As Mexican regional singer Chiquis Rivera belts out her latest song “Animate y Veras” she says it’s important that her fans can hear the emotion in her voice.

“Music is a way of expressing yourself, its therapeutic, at least for me it is,” said Rivera.

We met the singer inside Peer Music Studios in Burbank where she was working on her latest album. Her newest song was released June 28, with an album set for release early next year.

She’s been hands-on with every aspect of the album from writing, to choosing the album cover, and she's excited to share it, even showing her manager tips on how to dance to the music. “

"You gotta put some booty into it Richard,” she tells him.

Rivera is no stranger to the spotlight. This is her third album, she’s also the star and executive producer of the hit celebrity reality show, The Riveras, with her siblings. It’s returning for a fourth season on Universo.

It was the first reality show about a Mexican American family that airs in English. She’s also got a massive following on social media, where she shares almost every aspect of her life.

“I feel that people need to feel connected with you, it’s kind of that way of saying, 'Hey guys, I go through it too, I get sad, I’ve been through things.' That’s what I saw in my mom for so long,” said Rivera.

Her mother is the legendary singer Jenni Rivera, a regional Mexican artist from Long Beach who died in a plane crash on December 9, 2012 in Mexico. A woman who paved the way in this male-dominated genre of music, not only for Chiquis but for many artists.

Rivera says her mother, “Left me so many different lessons and in the way she inspires me now is that to sing from your diaphragm, to not be afraid, to not always want for it to sound pretty, but what you want people to hear is what you feel.”

Like her mother, she’s a businesswoman, launching a makeup line and a perfume. But for Rivera, its not about selling products, its about connecting with people.

“God has placed me here and he’s given me this platform and I have a voice for a reason and I want to not only sing and bring out products, but I want people to feel inspired by that,” she said.

While her music is in Spanish, she’s hoping it will not only inspire, but empower women of all backgrounds.
