RIDGECREST, Calif. — Crews and residents in Ridgecrest are cleaning up after fires and damage to homes and roads that were the result of a 7.1 magnitude earthquake that hit Friday night.

At 8:19 p.m., it happened at the northwest end of the same fault line as Thursday's 6.4 magnitude earthquake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The closest large population center was Ridgecrest with about 28,000 people. Many residents made the decision to not sleep inside after the second earthquake.

Governor Gavin Newsom issed an emergency proclamation for the neighboring area of San Bernardino County, also affected by the earthquake.

Heavy damage was found along State Route 178 between Trona and Ridgecrest with crews working to fix the area throughout the night.

The State Operations Center planned to work around the clock with local, state, and federal agencies to assist Kern and San Bernardino counties.
