BIG BEAR, Calif. - At the Baldwin Lake Ecological Reserve, you'll find flowers not found anywhere else on Earth as well as endangered plants.

“It's the most botanically diverse area in the United States. Unbelievable what you can find here," said tour guide, naturalist, and extreme enthusiast Gary Flanders.

Flower fanatics from all over the world come to the area high in the San Bernardino Mountains as it explodes with color during the late spring and early summer.

“In two acres you have 100 species of flowers," Flanders explained during a wildflower walk.

A couple of hundred different types of flowers grow in the Pebble Plain, an ecosystem only occurs in the area.

“The minerals from the rock leaches into the soil provide the right kind of ecosystem for these plants," Flanders said.

In the winter the ground temperature can reach 50 below zero and in the summer 160 degrees.

You can take a self-guided tour anytime.

“It’s fun to go hunting for these unusual flowers. That's the Bear Valley Sandwort," said Flanders. "People go nuts when they find it."
