CLAREMONT, Calif. - Students at Claremont High School are hard at work. Not only are they completing a class project, they are making something bigger. The students are producing and editing their own PSA that focuses on street safety.

"Bike safety, street safety, PSAs for that," said Talina Shariatzadeh, a junior at Claremont.

One group's PSA is about drunk driving. They felt compelled to tell the devastating side effects of getting behind the wheel while intoxicated. Together they created their concept.

"We get to show the effects of what like, drinking and driving or like, make people aware of how this can affect your life, other people's lives, it doesn’t matter," said Talina.

This is all for the Streets, Art, Safe competition that their teacher Ms. Hills signed them up for.

The organization, Streets Are for Everyone, works to spread awareness about all types of street safety. It holds this annual competition for students to make PSAs on a topic of their choice. At the competition's completion, there is a winner.

Talina won last year and hopes for the same outcome this time around.

"Knowing you did so much work that went into this one thing for four months and knowing it paid off was really rewarding," said Talina.

According to LADOT Los Angeles has one of the highest fatality rates in the country relative to other major U.S. cities. This is why the PSAs are so important, and that's something that's not lost on the students.

"Whenever you hear about a drunk driving accident or someone texting and driving, that’s so sad, but what can I do to make it better? So making these PSAs is really cool, especially because we can do it in such a creative way," said Talina.

Not only do students in L.A. get to be creative, they get to give back to the community in their own way by helping spread the message of street safety.

The Streets, Art, Safe Competition is on May 31 at 7 p.m. at the American Film Institute in Hollywood.
