GARDEN GROVE, Calif. – The community and supporters for the Garden Grove Police Department showed up in full force to honor the city’s “Fallen Five,” during the 32nd Annual “Call to Duty” Memorial on Thursday, May 17.

The memorial also honors the families of the five officers who lost their lives in the line of duty and people who have chosen careers in law enforcement.

The “Fallen Five” are Sergeant Myron Trapp, Officer Andy Reese, Officer Donald Reed, Officer Michael Rainford, and Master Officer Howard Dallies, Jr.

“I’m proud and thankful that we aren’t the only ones that remember,” said Michael Rainford III.

Rainford is the only child between Lori Yergler and fallen Officer Michael Rainford.

“My husband was killed 38 years ago. He was killed by a drunk driver and they do the memorial every year and it’s great that they remember. They’ve been really good to us,” said Lori Yergler.

Officer Rainford was killed on November 7, 1980 when he followed a driver he witnessed committing a traffic violation onto an on-ramp of the 22 Freeway and his cruiser was struck by a drunk driver. He died from his injuries 23 days before his son was born.

The hour-long ceremony included a memorial wreath, the Nicholson Pipes and Drums, the Bolsa Grande High School Concert Choir, and National Anthem singer Virgina Gonzalez, a flyover conducting the missing man formation, and a 21-gun salute.

The event was held during National Police Week.
