LOS ANGELES -- Do you like scary movies?

L.A. is no stranger to pop-up art shows and movie-themed exhibits, but for artist Maximilian Castillo, who just goes by the name "Maximilian," he's taken his passion for horror movies to the next level with I Like Scary Movies, a sprawling, multi-room dream or nightmare for horror fans of all ages.

“We were the Halloween house,” said Maximillian, explaining how he started making haunted houses as a kid. “You know, we were the house that everybody, every year would be excited to come to. And I got my whole family and friends involved in the whole thing."

"So, when I was in junior high, you know, I would destroy the house every year at Halloween, so that was my training ground. And now here I am doing it again, as a grown man, just kind of having a good time and sort of reinterpreting these movies in an arty sort of way.”

Maximilian says I Like Scary Movies sprang from his absolute love for the horror genre and the desire to create a way for other fans to connect with some of the classic horror films that are now part of our collective imagination, movies like The Shining, Nightmare on Elm Street, Beetlejuice, and It.

“I wanted people to really get excited about being in these environments,” said Maximillian.

Maximilian’s company, Ultra Productions, has been wowing movie fans with his immersive cinematic environments, promoting new movies at events like Comic Con, but I Like Scary Movies is a very personal passion project for him, and it shows.

“I wanted a little bit of something for everybody,” explained Maximillian. “And regardless of whether you're a scary movie fan specifically, there is something that is in here for you, too.”

Some big-name horror directors like Eli Roth (Cabin Fever, Hostel) and Joe Dante (Gremlins, The Howling) have already given their stamp of approval to the show, but it is the regular fans whom Maximilian is aiming at.

“The thing I love about horror movies,” said horror fan Ryan Jones who drove down from the Bay Area, “is that it's almost magical to be able to just sit and watch something and have it pull so much raw emotion out of you. So yeah, no it's amazing memories coming here and seeing all this.”

“This is sort of coming at a time where pop-ups are thing to do,” said Maximillian. “I love and appreciate everything that everyone's doing, but we're a step above that, to be honest. I'm calling it an interactive art installation.”

But for someone who is so used to creating things that go bump in the night, does Maximilian still get a thrill out of the work?

“It just fills my dark heart,” he said.

If Halloween seems a little too far away and you need a horror fix, I Like Scary Movies will be giving L.A. the creeps until June 16.
