HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. -- It’s a chilly Monday morning at Hermosa Beach, but that won’t deter Southern California native Kira Lingman from catching some waves.
“I’m about to surf, I hope it will be fun,” Lingman said.
She started surfing when she was a little kid, she followed the sport and joined her high school’s surf team. But in the years after, another passion took over her life:
“Surfing and writing music are both cathartic for me. It’s good to be one with the water, or one with music, just be in the moment and clear your mind,” said Lingman.
So in 2013 she co-founded a band in a Hermosa Beach garage. The group is called The Hollow Legs.
They all have day jobs, but work tirelessly on the side to perfect their art.
Lingman's on lead guitar and vocals, Zach Bozeman plays drums, and Hugh DeFrance plays the bass.
The Hollow Leg's music has been described as arresting, chaotic, intense, sweet, and soulful.
They’re also daring and edgy, as can be seen in the music video for their debut single, Shiver my Bones, where they rock out sporting neon body paint under black lights.
The Hollow Legs will be one of the local bands playing at this year’s BeachLife Festival, and it’s not just fans that are excited.
“To be able to even play my rock and roll for everybody on a stage that is right on the beach and is in my backyard, I’m so stoked about that,” said Lingman.
She says it will be an honor to play on the same stage as icons like Willie Nelson, and much like another of the festival's headliners -- Beach Boy Brian Wilson -- to be able to celebrate the SoCal way of life in her music.
