Construction has started on a 39-story mixed-use project designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry across from the Walt Disney Concert Hall at 1st and Grand in Downtown Los Angeles.

  • New Gehry-designed building will be erected on Grand across from Walt Disney Hall
  • Site will be the only place in the world with two Gehry buildings across from each other
  • Project is part of multi-billion dollar revitalization of Downtown Los Angeles

When completed, the site will be the only place in the world with two Gehry buildings face-to-face.

The developers behind the project say the building is part of the biggest development boom in Los Angeles in nearly a century, with $28.5 billion invested in downtown alone between 1995 and 2017.

When finished, the structure will consist of two towers called “The Grand,” with 400 residences including apartments and condos, a 20-story, 300-room Equinox Hotel and 200,000 square feet of commercial space for shops and restaurants.

“It’s one of a kind,” 90-year-old Gehry said at the ground-breaking ceremony Monday. “It’s been close to 15 years in the making and we’ve been through a lot of ups and downs and trials and tribulations.”

Billionaire philanthropist Eli Broad said the apartment complex will be the “crown jewel” on Grand Avenue, which is also home to his museum, The Broad.

“No city in the world has such great architecture in four blocks,” Broad said. More housing is planned for the lot south of The Grand on Hill Street.
