Aryana Fields, a fifth-grader at Playa Del Rey Elementary in Culver City, is hoping to send a powerful message to Los Angeles Unified School District teachers on the picket line with a song.

“I need to show people I care about what’s happening,” said Aryana, who is 10 years old.

Before the strike she contacted her teacher, Chryssa Elliott and told her she wanted to do something to help. Elliott, who has been Aryana’s teacher for two years, knew she could sing.

“I said, 'Let’s do a song, let’s figure out the lyrics and let’s get it done,'” said. Elliott.

So the two rewrote the lyrics to Fight Song by Rachel Platten, changing the words to relate to issues at the heart of the teachers' strike.

For Aryana, every word needed to be perfect.

“I’m supporting my teachers with it and it’s very important that I can send the right message,” she said.

The goal was to perform the song for her teachers while they are on strike.

As teachers spent their first four days picketing in the rain, they say knowing they had their students support behind them was inspiring.

“This song has motivated them to keep going, to show that students care about them and what they’re doing, and not to give up and not to cross the line,” said Elliott.
