For Betty Luce, this walker is her main set of wheels.

“I last drove January 21, 2016,” she said.

Luce is legally blind and sadly, her husband passed away a few years back. Her grandson, Justin, didn’t like the idea of her living alone without a car to get around.

“He started thinking of ways that it would help me get around at night,” she explained.

He came up with Go Go Grandparent, a concierge service that lets seniors call an Uber or Lyft without a smartphone.

“Never wanted a smartphone because everyone with a smartphone spends too much time on their phone,” Luce said with a chuckle, then showed off her flip phone.

For many seniors, losing their car often means losing the freedom that comes with it. According to the Pew Research Center, only 17 percent of seniors age 80 and over report owning a smartphone.

She referred to the service as “a lifeline.”

“You’re not dependent only on friends or family,” she said.

When users call, they get an automated system. This time, Luce was heading to a doctor’s appointment.

“It’s Justin. That’s his voice,” she explained while listening to the recording.

It goes on to explain the name of the ride-share driver as well as the make and model of the car. The driver is informed they’re going to be picking up an elderly person who may require extra assistance. They may have a walker or wheelchair. The service can also notify friends or family when the rider takes a trip.

While the driver can get Luce to her destination, they can’t walk her into wherever she’s going. So, she also relies on a caregiver.  Then, once she's done with her appointment, she uses Go Go Grandparent to get back home.

Her driver mentions he’s probably picked up three or four different “Go-Go Grandparent” customers, and Luce doesn’t waste any time letting the driver in on her secret.

“My grandson started it for me! So, I want you to know you’re with a real celebrity,” she said with a smile. “I was just happy that I was able to provide my grandson with something that he really could turn into a business.”

It’s a business that helps to keep her and thousands of others on the go. For more information on the service, visit www.gogograndparent.com
