1. A look at California's back-to-back mass shootings

In the course of 48 hours, two gunmen went on shooting rampages at both ends of California that left 18 dead and 10 wounded.

The unrelated massacres at a dance hall in a Los Angeles suburb on Saturday night and a pair of mushroom farms south of San Francisco on Monday have dealt a blow to the state, which has some of the nation’s toughest firearm laws and lowest rates of gun deaths.

As communities mourned the dead, some Democratic politicians repeated calls for tougher gun controls on the federal level.

2. State Water Project will increase 2023 allocations

California’s recent string of nine atmospheric rivers has yielded an upside.

The Department of Water Resources’ State Water Project announced Thursday that it will boost water deliveries by 1.27 million acre-feet in 2023 — enough to support the indoor- and outdoor-watering needs of more than 4 million households for a year.

The recent storms allowed the state to capture and store enough water in its reservoirs to deliver 30% of requested water supplies because of “extreme above average” precipitation, the agency said. In December, the DWR indicated it could only provide 5% of what had been requested because of below-average precipitation.

The state’s largest reservoirs — Oroville and San Luis — have together gained 1.62 million acre-feet of stored water, which is enough to provide water to 5.6 million households for a year.

3. Orange County climate activists release first 'report card'

Local environmental group Climate Action Campaign gathered like-minded partners and politicians Wednesday to give its first report card for Orange County environmental policy.

The group has been pushing for policies that can mitigate the impact of climate change, using the green report card as a tool to help residents understand what measures are and are not underway.

The conclusion of the group is that Orange County cities have failed to prepare for the climate emergency.

The inaugural report card, a 42-page document, found that Huntington Beach, Fullerton and Santa Ana were the top scoring cities. The report noted development of bike infrastructure in the cities and strides made toward green energy as achievements. The goal eventually is for the whole county to reach zero carbon emissions.

Rep. Adam Schiff, spurned by McCarthy, enters Senate race

Rep. Adam Schiff has announced his bid for U.S. Senate in the 2024 election.

He joins his Democratic colleagues’ Reps. Katie Porter and Barbara Lee in what is shaping up to be a tight-contested race for Sen. Dianne Feinstein's seat, who hasn’t committed to running for reelection.

Schiff announced his Senate run a few days after being removed from the U.S. House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy — a political move that Schiff believes results from his role in leading the impeachment of former President Donald Trump.

“Inside the Issues” host Alex Cohen sat down with Schiff to talk about his removal from the committee, hours before he announced his Senate campaign.
