COMPTON, Calif. — Gyms are struggling right now, and that includes 24 Hour Fitness.

What You Need To Know

  • California gyms are not supposed to be operating indoors due to the pandemic

  • 24 Hour Fitness declared bankruptcy and is closing about 100 locations

  • Being deemed an "essential business" would help the company

  • The brand started in California more than 30 years ago

Like all California fitness centers, the national chain's facilities have to be empty inside, but some locations are holding outdoor workouts in a bid to convince everyone they are essential.

The franchise is in trouble — they declared bankruptcy and are closing about 100 locations.

The brand started in California more than 30 years ago and most of the clubs are located here, which means most of the closures are happening within the state as well.

Chief Operating Officer Karl Sanft announced 10,000 employees would be furloughed twice, because gyms were closed, opened, and then closed again as COVID-19 numbers fluctuated.

“We believe we’ve gone above and beyond, and we’d love the opportunity to prove that we can be a successful part of the community, respect everything that’s happening with COVID, but reopen,” said Sanft.

In addition to Compton, 24 Hour Fitness has held similar pop-up, outdoor workout events in San Jose and San Diego.
