The USC women’s basketball team is having a renaissance, winning over 20 games for the first time in nearly a decade.

Head coach Lindsay Gottlieb calls it a once-in-a-lifetime season.

Before joining USC in 2021, Gottlieb served as assistant coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers, making her only the seventh female assistant coach in NBA history at that time.

Now, she’s known for something else, being a hands on coach and hands on mom at the same time.

Gottlieb joined Lisa McRee on “LA Times Today.”

Gottlieb has a staff and assistant coaches with her on the sidelines, but she also has two very special assistants: son Jordan, 5, and daughter Reese, who was born in the midst of the basketball season last fall.

“I was coaching until the point of birth, on one of those big physio balls. I was able to get the coaching staff ready for what would come after Reese was born. We set up a home team at the house with a postpartum doula and a lot of help. I’ve been very fortunate to have great people around me, but at the end of it I wanted to be super present for this team and not miss too much. And obviously be the most present mother I could be,” she shared.

Gottlieb has changed the practice schedule and her office availability to work with her kids’ schedules. She credits her staff and team for being flexible with their schedules as well.

“There are a lot of ways to be a great coach and there are a lot of ways to parent effectively. And you don’t have to fit a particular mold. But I do think we want to show the women that we’re coaching that you don’t have to sacrifice your family life to be great at the job and vice versa,” Gottlieb said. “People often talk about work/life balance, and I call it more work/life integration. You have to have it all working together and you can really have it all.”
