LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles elected Hydee Feldstein Soto as its first female city attorney in its history in 2022.
Now a little over a year into the job, Feldstein Soto joined “Inside the Issues” host Amrit Singh to reflect on what she accomplished in her first year and what lies ahead in the coming years.
The biggest accomplishment for her and her office was getting an injunction on Polymer80, the largest manufacturer of ghost guns in the country.
Under the settlement, the company will no longer be allowed to sell ghost gun kits in California without serial numbers and running background checks. Polymer80 also was ordered to pay millions in fines to the city.
As the city attorney, Feldstein Soto oversees the prosecution of all misdemeanors committed by adults within city limits.
Organized retail theft has been a focus of multiple law enforcement agencies throughout the state. Gov. Gavin Newsom has launched a statewide initiative to combat organized retail theft.
There is also a growing push to amend Proposition 47, which raised the threshold for the dollar amount for a misdemeanor to become a felony to $950. Feldstein Soto emphasizes the focus for her team is on tackling the people profiting from retail theft the most.
“...We’re trying to find a way to go up the food chain to prosecute the people actually profiting rather than the folks on the street who are being organized to go in and steal,” Feldstein Soto said.
Feldstein Soto then provides her vision for what she hopes to accomplish in the next year.
“It’s going to be looking outward. If my last year was organizing my office, this year is about legislation, about community, about taking back to my office the very real problems that folks have,” Feldstein Soto said.
