SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Though California is a sanctuary state for people seeking asylum, according to a new UC Berkeley poll, most Californians believe the border is not secure in preventing people from entering the country illegally.
While Californian Republicans are very much united in this belief, Democrats are divided on this issue with 44% believing the border is secure and 44% believing the border is not secure, 12% of Democrats polled had no opinion.
Professor Christina Mora, Co-Director of the Institute of Governmental Studies at UC Berkeley joined “Inside the Issues” host Amrit Singh to shed some light on the results from the recent poll.
“The biggest takeaway to me is the way we absolutely see the rift in the Democratic Party. It’s not a clear cut issue even amongst this group,” Mora said.
A stark difference between Democrats and Republicans is over the current federal asylum laws. 29% of Democrats feel the laws are just right, while 33% view them as too restrictive. Though 70% of Republicans in California believe the current laws are too lenient.
“[Asylum policy] is too restrictive, democrats think overall and not [sic] allowing the folks that should sort of benefit from asylum policy,” Mora said.
The poll also found more Latino voters agree with Republican views on asylum and border security.
“I think for a long time we only thought that Latinos only think about one way with the border, with the issue of immigration and that’s being pro-immigrant,” Mora said. “But here we’re seeing that even [these] rifts are coming into California.”
