LOS ANGELES — The Spill the Honey alliance aims to "amplify the voices of the historic African American-Jewish civil rights coalition and use the power of arts to change hearts and minds."
Dr. Clarence Jones, director of the group, spoke with "Inside the Issues" host Alex Cohen about the bonds between these two groups.
“During the Civil Rights Movement … I was one of the principal people most interested in who were these number of white people who seemed to be responsive of what we we’re doing,” Jones said referring to how the civil rights era strengthened Black and Jewish ties.
Back in 2019, Jones tweeted: "Attending a Synagogue while Jewish is becoming as dangerous in the United States as driving while Black!"
"It's incredible having worked so closely in the 1960s with Martin Luther King Jr. that we are at the stage now where there’s such a resurgence of antisemitism," Jones said.
A report by the Anti-Defamation League found that antisemitic incidents in the United States increased by 36% between 2021 and 2022.
Just last week, antisemitic flyers were found in at least two Southern California cities, including Redlands and Huntington Beach.
Jones worked with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the famous "I Have A Dream" speech delivered at the March on Washington in 1963.
Cohen asked Jones what he thought King would advise when it came to building coalitions to curb hate in all forms.
"If Dr. King were alive today, he would say, 'Timeout, let’s get real. There’s a serious threat to this nation' and he would appeal to the general population. We were able to do this because of our alliance and coalition with a small miner of the population, but were 24/7 to the same objective we had."
