In November 2020, she lost to Republican Rep. Mike Garcia by just 333 votes.

Smith said her team avoided in-person campaigning to ensure the safety of volunteers and voters.

"While it certainly was a hard loss to take, we don't regret the decision that really focused on keeping the public healthy as opposed to winning an election," Smith told "Inside the Issues."

Smith said going forward redistricting in California will affect her campaign strategy. It is unclear what the boundaries of the 25th District might look like.

"Redistricting is a challenge vexing everyone seeking elected office in the next cycle," Smith told host Alex Cohen.
