Glendale City Councilman Ara Najarian said residents have pent up desire to get out and resume their normal lives. But as industries that recently reopened are closing again due to a recent rise in coronavirus cases in Southern California, Councilman Najarian said he and other councilmembers are just trying to keep residents informed on all the updates.

What You Need To Know

  • Glendale has 1,375 cases and 106 coronavirus deaths

  • City Councilman said early case spike was from people who refused to wear masks, older people in skilled nursing facilities

  • City of Glendale monitors industries that are opened and closed on its website

“We are trying to primarily get the information out to our residents because it is so confusing,” Councilman Najarian said. “We're working very hard to let them know what they can do, what they can't do, but also educate the businesses because there's a lot of burden that’s being placed on the businesses with these new orders, and that involves limited occupancy, social distancing rules, personal protective equipment and face coverings, hand sanitizing, not getting too close when you're waiting in line.”

The city of Glendale outlines what’s open and what’s not on its website so that people aren’t confused.

“Face coverings are the rule throughout the city of Glendale,” he said. “We imposed that regulation very early on. We were one of the first cities to do so. We caught some heat for that.”

At the beginning of the pandemic, Glendale was seeing high numbers of coronavirus cases relative to surrounding cities. Councilman Najarian said the spike came from people who were unwilling to wear masks in public and also seniors and disabled populations at skilled nursing facilities who were more susceptible to COVID-19.

“They’re enclosed. They're not necessarily able to exert the same precautions that we living at home can exert. We think that was one of the main reasons is that there were many, many skilled nursing facilities in Glendale, which caused our numbers to spike,” he said.

As of Sunday, Glendale had 22 new cases of coronavirus and no new deaths.
