In 2018, 114 women were killed in Los Angeles County, which is the highest number since the beginning of the decade. On this episode of Inside the Issues we take a look at domestic violence in Southern California.
Los Angeles Times Journalists Nicole Santa Cruz and Iris Lee join us to talk about the number of women who have been killed and when they realized there was a trend.
The number of calls each day to domestic violence hotlines are about 20,000. Hannah Denyer, Violence Prevention Training Manager with the Los Angeles-based group Peace Over Violence, talks about what is being done to prevent these calls from happening in the first place.
Last year in Los Angeles County, survivors of domestic violence filed more than 21,000 restraining order petitions and fewer than 10 percent of these victims had legal representation. Sarah Reisman of the Los Angeles Center for Law and Justice talks about her experience representing these women and what it takes for them to get a restraining order.
Please note that if you need help, you can call the National Domestic Violence Hotline, any time day or night at 1-800- 799-SAFE (7233). All calls are free and confidential.
