Southern California has been home to many legendary tattoo artists including Ed Hardy, born in Costa Mesa, who spent his childhood hanging out at a local tattoo parlor studying the art.

Author, journalist and co-author of Wear Your Dreams: My Life in Tattoos, Joel Selvin, tells Alex Cohen about Hardy’s unique journey in the world of tattoos, from doing skin art on his friends when he was 10-years-old with Maybelline eyeliner, to licensing his art that would appear on everything from lighters to baby onesies.

See the Ed Hardy: Deeper Than Skin exhibition at the de Young Museum in San Francisco now through October 6, 2019.
