When dogs need blood transfusions, California veterinarians only have one option as a source of blood: two commercial canine blood banks.

Alex Cohen had a chance to talk to Judie Mancuso, Founder of Social Compassion in Legislation, who, in conjunction with Senator Scott Wilk, has helped introduce SB 202, which would allow animals that live with their owners to give blood at commercial blood banks.

A recent Los Angeles Times article gave insight to how these banks are operating and what secrets are being held.

“We feel the public does have the right to know how many animals are there, how long they’ve been kept and how often they’re bled,” Mancuso said.
