The 2022 Los Angeles mayoral race is gaining traction six months from the June primary election.

More than a dozen candidates are in the race to replace incumbent Mayor Eric Garcetti, who is term-limited.

In this week's "In Focus SoCal," host Tanya McRae sits down for a candid conversation with Garcetti, who was nominated in July by President Joe Biden to serve as his U.S. ambassador to India. Garcetti is awaiting a Senate confirmation hearing, and if confirmed, he is expected to leave office before his term ends next fall.

"I know it's going to be the adventure of a lifetime," he said. "I love India and the culture of India, which I studied in college...I'm really interested in the ties between LA and India."

Garcetti reflects on his last eight years as mayor and what he hopes LA will look like in the future.

"I hope 10 years from now, we will have halved our emissions, we will have 100% renewable energy," he said.

The mayor discusses how the city has been targeting its homelessness crisis with Proposition HHH, a $1.2 billion project to more than triple annual production of supporting housing, and to build approximately 10,000 units across the city. Garcetti also shares his experience quarantining in Scotland after contracting a mild case of COVID-19.

"I haven't had 11 days by myself for as long as I can remember," he said. "I recommend everybody get boosted and make sure that you protect yourself."
