GARDEN GROVE, Calif. — State funding that has helped organizations like the Orange County Food Bank provide diapers to needy families is set to expire in about eleven weeks.
In 2020, $1.25 million in annual state funding helped the OC Food Bank start the OC Diaper Bank. The diaper bank helps distribute enough diapers to provide a monthly supply for 10,000 kids in the county.
OC Food Bank Director Mark Lowry says 47 million diapers have been distributed in the county in four years.
The diapers go to organizations like Families Forward, which works with families in need.
Families Forward says the demand for diapers has increased 36% this year compared to 2023.
To help with the diaper fund, which will end in June, and to pay for other family resources, Families Forward and other organizations have organized a 24-hour fundraising effort that will take place on Wednesday, April 24.
According to the National Diaper Bank Network, the number of families unable to afford diapers has increased dramatically between 2023 and 2010.
According to the organization’s study, 47% of families reported diaper needs in 2023, up from about 33% in 2010.
